The Benefits Of Thermal Imaging Surveys

Thermography has a wide range of applications, from from medicinal procedures to its use by the armed forces. One of the most recent applications has been in the field of monitoring energy efficiency in residential and commercial properties. In these instances highly sensitive and accurate thermal imaging equipment is used to determine the areas of a property where heat loss is most evident.

Most people in society today are aware of the effects on the environment of global warming, and the causes of it. People are aware that each individual must reduce their carbon footprint in order for society to be able to reduce, and eventually reverse, the damage which is currently being done. People often fail to realise, however, that one of the most effective ways of reducing their carbon footprint is to ensure that their home is properly insulated.

When a thermal imaging survey is completed on their home most people are shocked at the results. A detailed thermal imaging report will explain the precise areas where heat is escaping, such as the roof, the walls, and the windows. Prior to being aware of these faults it is usually the case that people will simply turn up the thermostat in their home during the cold winter months, and will have their heating on for longer periods. This is both an inefficient and expensive way of maintaining heat within a building.

A thermal imaging survey will not only highlight areas of heat loss in a property, but will also provide recommendations as to how that property can be made to be more energy efficient. This could mean draft proofing windows, or replacing them with new energy efficient ones. Cavity wall insulation can be installed, as well as loft insulation.

The result of these measures will be a huge reduction in the amount of heat which is lost or wasted. Instead of heat escaping through these vital areas, it will instead be retained within the building. The occupiers of that building will be aware of the interiors being considerably warmer, and as a result will not feel the need to heat the property as much.

This has two important consequences. Firstly, a reduction in the use of energy to heat buildings naturally means a reduction in energy bills. An investment in effective insulation can therefore end up saving a property owner considerable amounts of money over time. It will also give the property a considerably higher resale value. Secondly, the reduction in the demand for energy means that there are less carbon emissions arising as a result of energy consumption, which has an overall beneficial effect for the environment.

Thermal imaging is a technology which has considerable benefits for property owners. Contracting a trained professional to carry out a thermal imaging survey means being able to identify the areas of a property which are effectively costing the owners money. It can also identify areas of dampness, meaning that this problem can be addressed and fixed before it becomes serious and expensive to resolve.

A thermal imaging survey is therefore an unobtrusive and effective way of discovering information about a building which would otherwise be invisible. It will be the first step in improving the energy efficiency of a building, which will benefit not only the owner, but also the environment in general.
