Home Energy Efficiency Crucial To Home Buyers

Homebuyers say that energy efficiency is a crucial factor in homes

According to research, home energy efficiency is one of the most important factors to homebuyers in the UK, along with a garden, parking spaces, security and broadband.

The survey, produced by Gocompare, found that buyers are eager for good home energy efficient installations, such as efficient central heating systems and double-glazing.

69% of participants indicated that central heating was their number one priority when it comes to buying a house, with 68% wanting double-glazed windows.

46% said they want a good energy efficiency rating, showing that the British public are engaged with the importance and effectiveness of home energy efficiency.

According to a separate study, improved energy efficiency helps save £290 per year for the average household.

“We found that many potential buyers are prioritising efficiency, security and connectivity over aesthetic features. This suggests that modern buyers are buying with their heads rather than their hearts and that investing in things like a new boiler, additional electrical sockets or modernising your home’s insulation could be a smarter investment than traditional selling points such as period features or conservatories,” said Matt Sanders from Gocompare Home Insurance, the authors of the report.

“It is surprising to see previous must-haves such as good schools and conservatories fail to make the top 20. However, our research shows that buyers are becoming more financially savvy and are willing to make compromises on the finer details of a property to keep costs down and avoid expensive work in the future.”

Last month, energy company EON said it wants energy efficiency to be put first in the UK’s energy policy.
